My Journey

Meet Angel Altman, LPN

Founder of Tea of Life Apothecary | Co-Founder of SA Integrative Health | Herbal Educator | Author

For nearly 30 years, I have had the privilege of caring for people as a nurse.

During those years, I celebrated victories with patients, walked beside families through heartbreaking diagnoses, and witnessed the incredible resilience of the human body. I learned that medicine can save lives, relieve suffering, and provide hope during some of life’s most difficult moments.

But I also noticed something that stayed with me.

Many people were merely surviving…they still weren’t truly well. They were consistently exhausted, live with chronic pain, battle anxiety. Many are struggling with digestive problems, are unable to sleep., or are fighting autoimmune diseases.

These people are taking medication after medication, yet still feeling like something was missing. I didn’t believe their symptoms were random. I believed the body was trying to communicate something deeper.

That belief led me to spend several years in an alternative medical practice, where I was introduced to a different way of looking at health. Instead of asking only, “What disease does this person have?” we also asked, “Why is the body struggling in the first place?”

That question changed the course of my life.

Today, I continue to bring together nearly three decades of nursing experience with my passion for herbal medicine, nutrition, functional wellness, and patient education. I don’t believe healing is found in one supplement, one herb, one diet, or one treatment. Every person is unique, and every healing journey is unique.

My goal has never been simply to sell tea.

My goal is to help people understand their bodies, recognize the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, and feel empowered to become active participants in their own wellness journey. Tea of Life Apothecary was built from that mission. Every herbal tea blend, tincture, educational article, class, and wellness resource we offer is created with one purpose:

To educate, encourage, and support people as they pursue better health—one step at a time.

Professional Background

Nearly 30 Years of Nursing Experience

For almost three decades, I have cared for patients in a variety of healthcare settings. Nursing has given me a deep appreciation for both the complexity of the human body and the importance of compassionate care.

Integrative Wellness

Working in an integrative medicine practice expanded my understanding of health beyond symptom management. I learned to appreciate how nutrition, digestion, stress, sleep, inflammation, hormones, emotional health, and lifestyle all influence one another.

Herbal Formulator & Educator

Every tea blend and herbal formulation offered through Tea of Life Apothecary is thoughtfully created using herbs selected for their traditional uses, historical applications, and supportive role in overall wellness. Just as important as the products themselves is the education behind them. I believe informed people make better decisions about their health.

Founder of Tea of Life Apothecary

Tea of Life Apothecary was created to be more than a tea shop. It is a place where people can discover handcrafted herbal teas, natural wellness resources, and practical education designed to help them better understand their bodies.

Co-Founder of SA Integrative Health

Through SA Integrative Health, I partner with Dr. Angela Stillwagon. We are committed to looking to explore a more comprehensive approach to wellness through education, lifestyle support, functional laboratory testing, and integrative therapies.

My book, The Breadcrumb Trail: A Journey Through Chronic Illness to Wholeness, shares the deeply personal story of how my own health challenges transformed not only my understanding of healing, but my understanding of myself.

From Diagnosis to Discovery

My Healing Journey

My passion for helping others didn’t begin with opening a tea shop. It began with becoming a patient.

At 43 years old, I found myself in a place I never expected to be. Physically limited. Exhausted. In constant pain and desperately searching desperately for answers.

What started as subtle symptoms gradually became impossible to ignore. My ankles, hips, shoulders, and wrists hurt constantly. Every movement reminded me that something wasn’t right. Even breathing became difficult. There were days I reached for my rescue inhaler six to ten times because I simply couldn’t catch a deep breath.

I seemed to catch every respiratory illness that came around. My body felt swollen and inflamed. Weak. i was completely out of balance.

As a nurse, I already suspected what might be happening. When my diagnosis was finally confirmed, it hit harder than I expected. Lupus.

I was told my condition was progressing rapidly. Based on how severe my symptoms had become, there was concern that I could eventually require oxygen and potentially be confined to a wheelchair by the age of fifty.

I remember sitting with those words, trying to imagine what the future might look like. I was terrified. But beneath the fear was another feeling….. Determination.

By that point, I had already spent three years working in an alternative medicine office, where I had seen countless examples of the body’s remarkable ability to move toward healing when given the right support.

That didn’t mean healing was easy, and it definitely didn’t mean there were guarantees. But it did mean there was hope.

My physician was incredibly supportive, but because of how quickly my symptoms had progressed, she also strongly recommended beginning treatment right away. I understood why. It was a reasonable recommendation based on everything she knew.

After many conversations, careful thought, and a great deal of prayer, I made a decision. I asked if I could give myself three months. Three months to fully commit to nutrition, lifestyle changes, stress reduction, and other complementary approaches while continuing to monitor my condition closely. If I saw no meaningful improvement, I was fully prepared to begin the recommended medical treatment.

That decision wasn’t made out of fear of medicine. It wasn’t made out of pride. It was made because I wanted to understand what my body was trying to tell me. I wanted to know whether there were pieces of my health that had been overlooked.

I consulted with an integrative physician and began working closely with our in-house dietitian. Together, we made significant changes to my nutrition and daily habits.

Within just three weeks, my joint pain had improved by nearly fifty percent. By the end of three months, I was about eighty percent better. I was incredibly grateful. But deep inside, I knew there was still another layer.

Over the months and years that followed, my healing journey became about much more than food. I began learning about herbs. Sleep. Stress Management. Nervous system regulation. Movement. Suppressed emotions. Past trauma. Relationships. Prayer. Rest. And the incredible ways each of those pieces influences the others.

I discovered that healing rarely happens all at once.

It happens in layers.

Each lesson revealed another breadcrumb leading me toward the next. Some days brought incredible breakthroughs, other days brought discouragement. There were moments when I questioned everything I thought I knew. There were moments when I felt completely lost.

Yet every experience—both the victories and the setbacks—became another breadcrumb pointing me toward a deeper understanding of health. That journey eventually inspired me to write The Breadcrumb Trail: A Journey Through Chronic Illness to Wholeness.

Like Hansel and Gretel finding their way through the forest one breadcrumb at a time, I realized healing wasn’t about discovering one magical answer. It was about following one small truth after another.

Looking back now, I can honestly say my greatest healing wasn’t simply physical. Yes, my body changed. But so did my heart, my perspective, my faith, my priorities, and perhaps most importantly… I found myself.

That journey is the reason Tea of Life Apothecary exists. Not because I believe I have every answer, but because I know what it feels like to search for them.

If my story teaches anything, I hope it’s this: Healing is rarely a straight line. It is a journey of learning, growing, adapting, and trusting God one step at a time.

And you don’t have to walk that journey alone.

My Faith & Philosophy of Healing

faith-herbs-healing-tea-of-life-apothecary

As my healing journey unfolded, I realized something that surprised me.

My faith in Christ and my understanding of health were never separate paths. They were always pointing to the same truth.

As I began studying Scripture with fresh eyes, I noticed something I had never fully appreciated before. From the very beginning of creation, God provided food from the earth. Throughout the Bible, we see herbs, oils, spices, and plants used as part of daily life, worship, cleansing, comfort, and care.

“I have given you every herb bearing seed… and every tree… to you it shall be for food.”
Genesis 1:29

Frankincense.

Myrrh.

Hyssop.

Olive oil.

Cedarwood.

Spikenard.

Balm.

These weren’t random details included in Scripture. They were part of God’s creation and His provision for His people.

The more I studied both the Bible and the incredible design of the human body, the more convinced I became that our bodies were created with remarkable wisdom. Every system is connected. What affects one part of the body often influences another. Our physical health impacts our emotional health. Our emotional health influences our nervous system. Our spiritual life affects how we experience stress, peace, hope, and perseverance.

We were never designed as separate pieces. We are whole beings created in the IMAGE of God. We have a:

Mind

Body

Spirit

Because of that, I don’t believe healing is usually found in one pill, one herb, one supplement, or one treatment. It is often a process of restoring balance in many areas of our lives.

For some people, that begins with improving nutrition. For others, it may begin with better sleep, learning to regulate a chronically stressed nervous system, addressing unresolved emotional wounds, strengthening relationships, spending time in prayer, moving their body again, or discovering herbs that have been traditionally used to support wellness. Every journey is different because every person is different.

One of the greatest lessons I learned through my own illness is that we don’t heal all at once. We heal in layers.

Sometimes God reveals the next step only after we’ve been faithful with the one He already placed in front of us.

That has certainly been true in my own life. As I continued learning, I also encountered topics that many people find uncomfortable—things like energy, frequency, vibration, and the profound connection between our emotions and our physical health. I understand why these conversations can make people hesitant.

Discernment matters.

Not every idea promoted in the wellness world aligns with my faith, and I believe it’s important to approach every new concept with both wisdom and biblical discernment.

At the same time, I don’t believe that everything we don’t yet fully understand is automatically outside of God’s design.

Scripture teaches that God is Spirit. We see Jesus laying hands on people. We see the Holy Spirit bringing peace, comfort, conviction, healing, and transformation.

There is much about God’s creation that we are still discovering. For me, those discoveries don’t weaken my faith, they strengthen it.

The more I learn about the human body, the more I stand in awe of the One who designed it.

People often ask me if I believe herbs heal people. My answer is simple.

No. I believe God heals.

Herbs don’t replace God. Medicine doesn’t replace God. Doctors don’t replace God. Supplements don’t replace God. Therapies don’t replace God.

They are simply tools.

Just as a surgeon uses instruments, or a farmer plants seeds, I believe God can use many different tools as part of His provision. Sometimes healing comes through medicine. Sometimes through surgery. Sometimes through lifestyle changes. Sometimes through prayer. Sometimes through relationships. Sometimes through the quiet work He does in our hearts.

My role is not to promise healing, only to educate. To encourage. And to walk alongside people.

I want to help them better understand the incredible body God created and the many ways they can support it.

That is why Tea of Life Apothecary exists.

Not to offer quick fixes or to sell false hope.

But to create a place where people can learn, ask questions, discover the gifts found in God’s creation, and become active participants in caring for the bodies they have been entrusted with.

I don’t believe wellness is simply the absence of disease.

I believe true wellness is learning to steward the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—with wisdom, gratitude, and faith.

That is the foundation beneath everything I do.

And it always will be.

Turning Pain Into Purpose

When I first began my own healing journey, I wished there had been one place where I could find trustworthy information, quality herbal products, and someone willing to simply help me understand what my body was trying to tell me.

Instead, I found myself piecing everything together one breadcrumb at a time.

I read books.

I listened to podcasts.

I attended conferences.

I spent countless hours studying research, herbal medicine, nutrition, functional health, and the incredible design of the human body.

I asked questions and I tried things that worked. I also tried things that didn’t.

Every success taught me something. Every set back taught me something too. Eventually, I realized something that changed the way I looked at health forever.

Healing isn’t about finding one magic supplement, one diet, one doctor, or one herb. It’s about learning how all of the pieces fit together.

That’s why I opened Tea of Life Apothecary. Not simply to sell herbal tea but to create the place I wish I had found years earlier.

A place where people feel welcomed instead of judged. Where questions are encouraged and education comes before products. Where we focus on understanding the body rather than simply chasing symptoms.

Every tea blend on our shelves has been thoughtfully formulated with intention. Every tincture was chosen because I believe it has a purpose.

Every article I write is an opportunity to help someone better understand how wonderfully complex—and beautifully designed—the human body truly is.

I don’t expect people to believe everything simply because I say it. As a matter of fact, I encourage people to ask questions. Do your own research and continue learning. To become your own advocate.

One of the greatest lessons my nursing career has taught me is that no one will ever care about your health more than you do.

That isn’t meant to be discouraging. It’s empowering.

You deserve to understand your body and to be able to ask questions. You deserve to participate in decisions about your health.

If Tea of Life Apothecary can help you feel a little less overwhelmed, a little more informed, and a little more hopeful, then we’re accomplishing exactly what we set out to do.

Today, Tea of Life Apothecary continues to grow beyond what I ever imagined.

What began as my personal healing journey has become a community of people who are searching for answers, learning together, and supporting one another.

In addition to our handcrafted herbal teas and botanical products, we provide educational articles, classes, workshops, and wellness resources designed to help you better understand the body’s interconnected systems.

For those looking for a more personalized approach, I also co-founded SA Integrative Health with Dr. Angela Stillwagon. Together, we offer integrative services and advanced wellness testing for individuals who want to explore their health more deeply and develop personalized plans based on their unique needs.

Whether you’re visiting us for a cup of tea, reading one of our educational articles, scheduling an appointment, or simply looking for encouragement, I hope you find something more than information.

I hope you find hope.

Because I’ve been where you are.

I’ve experienced the frustration of feeling like no one had the answers.

I’ve experienced the fear of wondering if my body would ever recover.

And I’ve experienced the joy of discovering that healing often begins the moment we stop asking, “How do I silence this symptom?” and start asking, “What is my body trying to teach me?”

That question changed my life.

My hope is that it changes yours, too.
